This is not an exhaustive list of all the gardens and parks on which James Pulham and Son worked - it is simply a listing of the sites discussed in the book that Claude Hitching is hoping to produce. These do not include all the sites that are known to still exist, and there must also be quite a few that we do not know about, due to the lack of records relating to the firm's latter years in business. If you happen to know of any such sites, or suspect that you do, then Claude will be delighted to hear about them.
Some of the gardens, ferneries and parks listed here still exist today in extremely good condition, and are available for the public to see and enjoy, whilst others have become derelict and overgrown over the years, or are currently in private ownership, and consequently not open to the public. You can find some brief notes and pictures on a few selected sites by clicking on the Site Title links, or on the thumbnail illustrations to view larger pictures.
Contact telephone numbers and website details are included for those sites that are available for the visitor to enjoy, but readers are especially requested not to try to contact anyone connected with those marked as 'Private.' Some owners have told us quite emphatically that the last thing they want is to be bothered by 'coach loads of people turning up uninvited, and expecting to be allowed to poke around our garden!'
This listing is in alphabetical sequence of the main geographical areas of the country, subdivided into counties and towns etc, and includes some brief notes to summarise what's there, together with information about accessibility. Click on the Area you want, and you will be taken straight to it.
An alphabetical directory of the websites associated with all of the following gardens that are open to the public can be found in the 'Links' page.
Use the following internal links to go directly to the area in which you are specifically interested. From there, you will be able to take a 'tour round the country,' simply by clicking on one area after another, or return to this Page by clicking on the 'Where?' button.
You will find Links from a few sites to another Page that includes some brief notes and pictures about that specific site. Click on the Title to go to that Page, or click on the thumbnail pictures to get large-screen versions. You can return to the place you left on the 'Area' Page via the 'Back' button on your Internet Screen, or to where you are now by clicking the 'Where?' button.
